SUTTON, Quebec (WCAX) – President Donald Trump late on Monday agreed to a 30-day pause on his tariff threats against Canada. Still, the looming possibility of tariffs has many residents of Quebec on edge.
In the ski town of Sutton, Quebec — just miles from the Vermont border — there was worry and frustration Monday from local residents about the prospects of a trade war.
“We feel betrayed as Canadians because we are partners in business and I think it’s totally unfair,” said Claude Prevost of St-Bruno-de-Montarville.
“I think it’s obviously… it’s a no-win situation for anybody because it’s going to hurt our economy, the States as well,” said Michael Hynes of Sutton. “I think that our response being targeted is probably a good idea, but you can get really out of hand and you know, we’re probably a bad couple of quarters away from a recession here in Canada. It’s like, yeah, it’s bad news.”
Despite the tariff threats, local residents we spoke with say the president’s action doesn’t sour their relationship with Americans. “It’s totally regarding Trump. I have nothing regarding United States people of America. I love this country. We are good neighbors. It’s totally regarding Trump and his administration. That’s it,” Prevost said.
“I don’t necessarily understand why they voted for him but I don’t resent them. I mean, he was elected the presidential candidate. I don’t resent them,” said Alexandrea Kelly of Sutton.
Along with serious concern about a recession and massive impacts on goods for consumers here in Canada, everyone we spoke to also expressed worry for the global economy and its stability.
