NAU Campus Living announced Wednesday afternoon the addition of Black Culture Focused Housing to the Mountain View Hall starting in Fall 2025. This comes days after the start of Black History Month.

“This new living community is designed to celebrate and explore the richness of Black intellectual, social and cultural life, offering a space for Black-identifying students and allies to connect, grow and thrive together,” the announcement said.

The Black Culture Focused Housing will be located in a wing neighboring the Indigenous Peoples Living Learning Community, which was established in Fall 2022.

Mountain View Hall has been vacant since October 2024 due to bat infestations, which required students to move to off-campus housing.

On the information page for the new housing, NAU Campus Living states the community aims to foster, connect and celebrate Black culture.

Events in the new housing will include cultural dinners, guest speakers, hairstyling partnerships with the Black Student Union (BSU) and educational opportunities, including study groups and field trips.

The housing community was created through collaborative advocacy between BSU’s former President Parriss Adams, former Vice President BJ Piper and members of the current executive team. They plan to continue working with the Office of Inclusion and Campus Living to support this community.

“Black Culture Focused Housing will give interested students the opportunity to connect with and interact with students that support, appreciate and value Black culture,” Adams said.

Campus housing applications for academic year 2025-26 are now open on the campus housing website.
