INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Tarris Marie, an author and actress known for creating gritty narratives with powerful anti-heroines, has released her latest book, “Empress Creed.”
The novel transports readers back to the 1930s in Chicago, telling the story of a young woman destined for greatness.
Marie began writing in 2020 and inspired the newest creation from her deep connection to the past. “This is a love letter to my grandparents,” she explained during an interview. “I wanted to capture the era they grew up in, particularly the music I grew up listening to—Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington and The Ink Spots, which my grandfather loved. I had not seen many books set in this time period in the Midwest, and as someone raised in Gary, Indiana, and with family in Chicago, I wanted to bring that history to life.”
The novel blends historical fiction with romance, a theme central to all of Marie’s work. “Even though my books often explore gritty subjects and the underworld, there is always love in them. I believe love conquers all,” Marie said.
In addition to her writing career, Marie is also an actress. She was previously in the corporate world, where she worked in fashion retail for 15 years. However, after losing her central vision, Marie transitioned to acting, a lifelong dream she had previously set aside. Despite the challenges she faced, including legal blindness, she found a new path in acting school and continues to pursue her passion.
“I lost my job when I lost my vision, but I did not lose sight of my dreams,” she said. “It was a roadblock, but I took it as an opportunity to pivot and find a new direction in life.”
Her resilience has been key to her success, not only in her personal journey but also in her creative work. Marie’s books, including her debut “The Black Pearl,” are available wherever books and audiobooks are sold.
